the subsidies to pbs. i like pbs and big bird and i like you, too, but i'm not going to keep spending money on things i have to borrow money to pay for it. martha: big bird woke and heard that. users posted 17,000 big bird tweets a minute. one such account @firedbigbird. bill: a year ago in a conversation with governor romney he said when i get one-on-one in the president he's going to say x and i'll say y. he will say "a" and i'll say "b." that was a year ago. he has been waiting a year. if you look at these snap polls. oftentimes this is an emotional reaction. whether it's cbs or cnn there was a clear winner in this debates. martha: governor romney had take and lot of heat from conservative watchers of all of this who said he had yet to make a passionate conservative argument throughout the course of this campaign. i think those folks will be satisfied with what they saw last night. he was ago that and connected to what he was saying. he made his points. and he turned that key in a way that may satisfy the bill kristols of the world and the other people who had been negative on him. bill:

at the magnus arena at the university of denver in denver, colorado. i'm jim lehrer of the pbs "news hour," and i welcome you to the first of the 2012 presidential debates between president barack obama, democratic nominee, and former massachusetts governor, mitt romney, republican nominee. the debates are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six roughly 15-minute segments with two-minute answers for the first question, then open discussion for the remainder of each segment. thousands of people offered suggestions on segment subjects or questions, via the internet and other means, but i made the final selections, and for the record, they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments as i announced in advance will be three on the economy, and one each on health care, the role of government, and governing. with an emphasis through out on differences, specifics, and choices. both candidates will also have two-minute closing

in cleveland, ohio. he poked fun at governor romney's suggestion in wednesday's debate that he would defund pbs, the home of "sesame street." let's take a listen. >> even though he has been proposing this plan for months now, he has run into a little trouble explaining how it would work without blowing up the deficit or making it work for middle class families. the other night he ruled out asking millionaires and billionaires to ask to pay even a dime more in taxes. he said no way he is going to close loopholes that are giving big oil companies billions of dollars each year in corporate welfare. and in tax breaks for corporations that are shipping jobs overseas and profits overseas, he said he never heard of such a thing, never heard of it. who knew, he said. he acted shocked. said he needs a new accountant. his current accountant is doing just fine. when he was asked how he would actually cut spending and reduce the deficit, he said he would go after funding for public television. so for all you moms and kids out there, don't worry. somebody is finally getting tough on big bird. elmo, you bett

minutes and then there is a rebuttal. megyn: jim lehrer of pbs will be moderating. they devote the rest of the 15-minute block to a discussion. so hopefully there will be a chance to press the candidates for followup, or real answers if they try to dodge. because you know and our viewers know having watched 25 presidential debates during the primaries, they all do it. they dodge. they hear this is a question on jobs. what's my policy on jobs, this what is i'm going to say without necessarily answering the question asked. hopefully the mat, the discussion after the initial response will give us a chance to hear real answers. having studies up on these debates it seems like the need many gets moved not so much by these soaring rhetorical moment but by a gafer that one of them may have or by one moment of connection that they may have with the viewers at home. ronald reagan, there you go again. bill: i think you make a great point on that. what you are saying is it's built in a format that will help encourage robust exchanges that would alloy the other to challenge the other one. megyn: we
